RANTS ARE BACK: EVIL DENTISTS! (reposted by popular demand)!

Yes, let's face it. There are things to rant about, things that make us crazy and tick us off. Well, the focus of these posts will be those people and situations that make me rant! My rants began four years ago on a different blog. I'm the original!

Blogged originally, Wednesday August 31, 2011
"Evil Dentists or a Brush With Madness!"

HERE IT IS, AS PER MANY REQUESTS: 'EVIL DENTISTS'!

"I've been fortunate I haven't had an evil dentist until fairly recently. I have no idea what the problem was. It is a one-off because I refused to have said dentist ever treat me again.

Did you know that a small percent of the general population is supposed to be psychopathic? Now the term I believe is sociopathic, but an unsympathetic, unfeeling, compassionless individual by any other name is a horror at any time, but most especially when one is dependent on said individual.

"Sorry, but that hurts. Could you just wait a moment?!"

"MOVING ON!"

Ah, I thought as I began to recall that scene in Marathon Man wherein Dustin Hoffman finds himself at the 'mercy' of an escaped Nazi. This Nazi was a dentist and he's just come out of hiding. This is the famous scene where  the dentist wants to know if it's safe for him or not. He thinks Hoffman knows, but of course Hoffman doesn't. Nazi dentist is assuming he knows.

Here's a clip:

I thought of this scene shortly after I left. It helped. It not only helped me to be able to laugh about it all, but it helped me to feel a kinship with this man who is being tortured by a sadistic lunatic who happened to be a dentist.

Who doesn't feel that initial fear when leaving the safety of the dental reception area and walking across gleaming floors toward the dental treatment room. Closer and closer we step, knowing we are stepping ever closer to THAT ROOM where the drill is,where those nasty, horrid instruments are. That one, you know, with the sharp end that hurts like hell if it slips.

"Just going after the plaque now!"

How steady are the dentist's hands we think?! Even if it is a kindly dentist, a dentist we have developed a rapport with we still wonder.

Perhaps he just found out his wife is cheating with his best friend! Or his son was arrested selling drugs and won't be carrying on the tradition of denistry.

Do we greet the dentist a little too effusively watching oh so carefully his reaction to our overt friendly, cheerful attitude?

Then possibly, nervously--do we watch his hands. Do they look steady? Is the mood alright?

You see there might be a little checklist we have that we run through. It is our way of reassuring ourselves that the dentist isn't unduly upset.

Of course here is the problem: IT DOESN'T WORK WITH NEW DENTISTS!

"Hello new dentist, you look friendly enough but are you perhaps a little sadistic, just a mite? Did your wife/husband/girfriend/boyfriend aggravate you? Was the intimacy that you looked forward to not performed right or up to your expectations? Are you pissed off now about it? You didn't come in here today to get back at anyone, right?

I mean you're smiling at me, but I don't know what kind of agenda you might have!

I HATE EVIL DENTISTS!

Dentists are in control! We can do with that control what we will AFTERWARDS, but whilst we are sitting there trapped, with our mouths open, nervously watching them, WE ARE SO UNDER THEIR CONTROL!

ARGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew! Takes a breath. Thank you! Much better now or UNTIL I AM SITTING IN A DENTAL WAITING ROOM--AND I HEAR, 'THE DENTIST WILL SEE YOU NOW!'

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!

Disclaimer: I’m far from perfect, but I try never to hurt anyone’s feelings or to cause them worry. Having said that, these are my rants; I rant when my tolerance level is nil or below.

Darkest Gothic/Paranormal Romance You'll Ever Read!

I love paranormal romance and I love horror. I think the two can be combined easily. In fact, I think when they are it makes for darkly gripping fiction.
The dark is addictive. The world of the undead fascinates us, it does me! It always has and will. Vampires are sexual, wanton beings and I like them placed in stories where they 'live' up to what they are.

This series is the darkest Gothic/paranormal romance you will find. The first novel invites you to view the murder-suicide by an incestuous father. That sets everything in motion, the second and third novels contain the confessions of a demon who swears his love is real for the heroine. The fourth book is about the heroine's adopted daughter falling in love with Dracula. That is deeply romantic, albeit darkly! What else would sex with Dracula be but that?

Remember, it's all dark stuff I write because the dark intrigues and frightens me.

About the Series:

THE HOUSE ON BLACKSTONE MOOR
After discovering her savagely murdered family, Rose Baines is plunged into a nightmare of hell. She is incarcerated in two madhouses, after which she is helped to obtain a position as governess at Blackstone House. Located on haunted moorland, nothing is as it seems for the House and its inhabitants have hideous secrets. There is unimaginable horror there, and love too--love that comes at a terrible price.

UNHOLY TESTAMENT - THE BEGINNINGS
Eco, first seen in the previous book, has documented all of the sins he has committed during the course of his immortal life. Trying to get Rose to forgive him, he forces Rose to read his journal by holding her children hostage.

UNHOLY TESTAMENT - FULL CIRCLE
Vampiric orgies and satanic rites fill the pages of this book. All of the hideous secrets of Blackstone House are revealed. Every evil that Rose Baines was subjected to is closely examined, as are those who committed the worst sins against her.

THE FOURTH BRIDE
After the tragic and sudden death of her groom, Dia, cursed by Dracula as a babe, is taken to his castle. Once there, she is seduced and turned by the count and becomes his fourth bride. The other brides are to be her sisters. All are to love and feed upon one another. Dia's tale is full of erotic sex and graphic violence. It is a tale of love and lust but mostly of blood, for the blood is everything.

Excerpt: Horror in the Cellar!

promo 99 cents/few days only

"As I reached for the cabinet, I noticed the cellar door was open. That door was always locked with a padlock.

Something made me walk toward the open doorway. There I stood, gazing down at the dank, dark stairs. Then as if in a trance I picked up a lamp and lit it. Some force was urging me on.

Go Rose. Go and see!

I began to walk but recoiled for there was a stench of damp and rot but of something else too—the putrid odor of decaying meat. Yet still I went.
I didn’t see it right away. That is, I didn’t realize what I was looking at immediately. At first they looked like sacks of flour or potatoes.

It wasn’t until I got closer that I really I saw what they were. But then I stopped. I stopped because my brain was beginning to make sense of it all. At last I began to understand what I was looking at, for there before me were several corpses!

What I had discovered were several bodies that looked as though they had been drained of blood.

I turned to flee, but as I did, I realized I had come upon another gruesome discovery. For there, chained to a wall was Mrs. Sternwood.

She was in a weakened state and called to me. As I began to move toward her to see if I could help I heard someone shout, “Don’t go near her! She is not yet destroyed! If you step too close she will kill you, Rose. She has enough power to.”

VAMPIRES ON THE MOORS!

99 cents on offer!

Her suspicions aroused, Rose Baines steals out of Blackstone House to see what hellish things are going on.

"I stole out to the moors in the direction of the altar stone. I stood there for some moments wondering where they had all gone, but then I noticed what looked like a tunnel. I could hear laughter and talking--screams and other sounds too, coming from somewhere deep inside. I decided to see what was happening.

It was dark but there were candles about. I continued on toward the sound. People moved about somewhere close by, sending flickering shadows along the walls ahead of me.

Creeping along a little more I saw chambers—enclosed areas filled with cushions and people… people doing things to one another.

I didn’t realize what they were doing at first but then I did, and I nearly cried out. Handsomely dressed men and women lay prostrate on the makeshift beds, offering their necks, their arms, their bodies, so that their mates – black-clothed figures – could bite into their flesh and drink their blood!

I watched in horror while the victims moaned with ecstasy while the predators licked the flowing blood from their skin. They loved it so much, they called out for the most indecent things to be done to them.

Then the clothing was discarded and men and women in all sorts of combinations began to pleasure one another.

Meanwhile they continued to feast on one another, and those they feasted on were screaming their delight!

I turned to run, but someone grabbed me. I managed to break free, and started to run as fast as I could.

I did finally emerge back onto the moors, only to be grabbed again and pushed to the ground. A girl held me down, a girl I recognized, a girl whose chin was caked in blood.
She was Imogene, the nasty one from the club. She reached for me and bent over me. “I will show you pleasure, I will show you worlds you cannot imagine!”

“No! No!” I cried, somehow managing to break away from her. I ran again as fast as I could. She chased after me but suddenly stopped to sniff the air. She then fell upon the ground.

At first I didn’t realize what she was doing, I only understood when she looked up and smiled. “Virgin blood, sweet to the taste!”
I don’t remember screaming. All I know is I was soon surrounded by a sea of anxious faces."

Excerpt: LEGEND OF BLACKSTONE MOOR

“What is it, children? What do you wish me to see?”

They exchanged mysterious looks to further dramatize the situation.

“Yonder, Miss! Do you want to see the ancient stone of legend?”

“What legend is that, Simon?”

Ada spoke up. “The legend of Blackstone Moor!”

They began to drag me then toward a rocky mount. “Just in here.”

I was led through a narrow crevice. It quite reminded me of Stonehenge. I wondered what it could be and began to grow excited, too.

Suddenly we stopped as Simon pointed at a large flat rock. “There, that’s it!”

It looked like a ledge that had been deliberately laid down. I went to touch it but Ada warned me. “Touch it only if you dare!”

“I dare!” I cried. The surface was far smoother than I would have imagined.

“See how black it is, Miss?”

“Quite black,” I agreed.

Simon nodded. “It’s as black as the eternal night! And do you know why it’s black, Miss Baines? It’s black with blood!”
“Simon!”

“Yes, truly! It has blackened with blood and gore and innards and guts and things that soaked into the stone!”

“What a thing to say! Where did you hear such things?”
“I just know! Ada and I both know!”

I drew him aside. “Simon,” I chided. “You should know better. This is not something either of you should think about, but it’s worse for Ada since she’s younger than you. You ought to know that.”

He looked down. “I suppose, but Ada’s older than you think!”

“Is she indeed, well I don’t think it appropriate, alright?”
“Yes, Miss Baines.”

“I don’t think it’s a subject for children. Besides, it’s probably not true anyway.”

He was agreeing with me, yet there appeared across his face the most quizzical look. “But there were human sacrifices practiced on these moors once and all manner of dark rites, too. Many people died here.”

This was making me feel sick.
“Who told you this?”
“No one.”
“Don’t lie, Simon.”

“Someone I can’t say…” Ada was watching him wide-eyed. Clearly she didn’t want him to give me a name, but I continued to press him.

At last he cracked. “Dora! It was Dora! Do you feel better now?!”

“It’s not that I feel better, I just wanted to know who told you such things.”

Ada looked at me intently. “Please, you won’t have Dora punished, will you?”

“No, of course not, but whatever do you mean?”

Ada shook her head. “She might be severely punished, that’s all.”

She quite unsettled me with that. But then I took it to mean she might be sacked. “Well, I shall only speak to her then, alright?”

“Oh yes, Miss. Thank you, Miss.”

I took their hands then and we headed back to the house, the children walking just ahead of me, whispering. And I watching their backs, wondering what they were saying."

99 cents! Did Rose's Father Let In Evil?

AWARD WINNING, THE HOUSE ON BLACKSTONE MOOR IS 99 CENTS. Limited time!

After discovering the murder of her entire family by her mad, incestuous father, Rose is incarcerated in a madhouse where she is cared for by Dr. Bannion. While there, she experiences other terrors.

Excerpt:

"Night, I decided, was the worst time in this place, for I heard sobs and screams, too. Rarely did anyone come to comfort those who suffered. I tried to shut my ears to the noise but it was impossible.

There was one woman near me, who just wept. I crept out of bed to see if she was alright.  I whispered to her. I was afraid to reach over and offer a comforting hand for fear as to what she might do. But I did ask her if I could help. There was no answer. Not even a word.

As I walked back to my bed, another called me over. “There’s nothing you can do for her, no one knows why she cries, not even the staff. They don’t even know her name. They just found her that’s all, found her near dead outside. Someone nearly killed her. Best go back to bed now, ‘fore they see you up.”

That was all she said before she turned over. This was an awakening for me. I wasn’t the only person to have suffered hell on earth. I lay back and thought about what I had heard. And between my thoughts and the occasional scream and sob, I was serenaded until sleep finally came.

An attendant woke us all with a bell. “Time to get up. Breakfast now. Time to get up!”

No one grumbled or said anything. The faces looked as they usually looked, blank for the most part, sometimes sad. It varied. The unknown woman was just rising when another attendant yanked her out of bed and began hollering.
I nearly called out but was advised against it by one of the other inmates. “You can’t do nothing. Best not to try.”

My first Monday at Marsh. There were buckets of water so that we could wash. After which we had to put on the same shift again. Then we were marched two abreast, toward the dining room to get our meal. We weren’t supposed to talk, although many did. Some spoke gibberish and others in half sentences no one understood.

I decided those that inhabited a far-off world, were better off than those like myself who had most of our wits about us. It was one of my first lessons. The lesson of Marsh.

Breakfast was pottage and watery tea. I just stared at mine until an arm reached out and took both the pottage and the tea away. When I glanced after it, one of the women shook her head. “If you don’t take it quickly that’s what happens. Serves you right love, this ain’t Buckingham palace.”

There was a ripple of laughter after that, although I think in retrospect few understood what they were laughing at.
“Yes, of course, any information you can give me is of great importance.”
Monday morning found me staring at Dr. Bannion’s ink bottles trying to summon up the courage so I could go on.

“Please Rose, it is good to tell me these things. You are brave and I admire you, do go on. What kinds of fairy tales were they?”

“They were different than those my mother told me. These were about monsters and demons…you see Father was so different after his stroke, so very changed.”
He admonished me gently for not having told him of this before. I said I was sorry and went on. “They were dark stories filled with violent deaths and sometimes even things children were not meant to know about…”

“What kinds of things?”
“Just things that were upsetting about ladies and gentlemen.”

“And?”
“Dr. Bannion, please…”
“But you must give me an idea, Rose.”
“He told me things they did to one another, vile disgusting things! Things he did to me…” I broke down then. There I was, a sobbing mess with Dr. Bannion shaking his head.

I felt I knew what he was thinking—he was thinking of my father and the effect that recent assault must have had on me. He told me to rest and get my breath back, which I did.

“They are terrible things you have locked away in your mind, best let them out and they will go away.”
“Yes, sir.”
He was studying me carefully. “And there was violence, too. Your mother you say suffered as well as your siblings?”

“Yes, quite.”
“But that is all?”

We both knew what he meant by that. “Yes,” I replied. “I am certain of that.” My mind began to wander, or not to wander really but to fix itself upon a thought I had had.

“Rose, you look far away, what is it, can you tell me?”
“Dr. Bannion, do you believe people can invite evil in?”
Every drop of blood appeared to have drained out of his face. I watched him put the pen down.

Now I began to worry that I really sounded insane, but he started speaking just then, “Let us be clear, Rose. When you say, ‘let evil in’, what exactly do you mean?”

“Well, I mean he changed so much and as I was a child, I hadn’t connected his actions with other things…”
“Like what other things?”

This was difficult. “I don’t know. Our home seemed to have changed when he did.”
“You mean his actions caused things to be different.”

“No, Dr. Bannion. I think I mean more than that. I mean, truthfully I had forgotten about this for the longest time. But now, what I mean is, I remember clearly feeling the house was different. We were all unhappy, yes—and suffering too—but there was something else. Something dark had come to dwell amongst us.”

Dr. Bannion stared at me. It was difficult to say what he was thinking. “Did anything happen then?”

“No, it was more like a feeling of dread that came upon me. I asked my mother if she felt it too, and she told me—I was a child you understand—not to worry about such things. And that’s when the fairy tales started.” Suddenly I paused:.“Dr. Bannion, now that I am an adult it seems to me that he was using those fairy tales to accomplish something evil.”

He didn’t reply for the longest time. He looked quite thoughtful, then he said, “Sometimes bad things happen to nice people through no fault of their own. Sadly, it is what happened to all of you, including your father.”

The Great London Fire of 1666!

99 cents promo!

"A veritable fire storm raged in the city. Attempts were made to put it out but they failed miserably. The one comforting thing was the fire was far from us—and I didn’t feel that my coven would be harmed. As well you know vampires are destroyed by fire.

At last I reached it and saw they were fine. Edmund rushed out from the doorway! “Master! Master!”

I embraced him and asked how everyone fared. He said they were all fine. My coven was, but other covens did perish. I was to find that out. We are rather in contact, many of us, those masters and myself.

In the course of the next three days, a firestorm carrying within it hell-like heat swept through vast parts of the city. There would be blame for this too put at Lord Mayor Bloodworth for his gross indecisiveness—in not using firewalls to stem the conflagration.

The king and his brother helped fight the fire. the king making decisions that ordinary people were reluctant to make—that is, to assume responsibility for what should be destroyed and so forth, offering up stops for the fire, and sacrificing buildings to achieve this.

Soon there was little but blackened stones and fire-stinking rubbish that remained of London. All the houses were made of timber and they went up in flames.

It was appalling. Truly, it all seemed a vast, smoldering wasteland from one end of the city to the other; a flattened noxious smelling city had come to replace the previous one. I had never seen anything like it in my existence.

London was changed forever. Thousands were homeless and countless businesses were destroyed. There would be hell to pay too, as human beings are always at their worst in times of crisis..."

Lord Avery and Necromancy

99 cents promo

More confessions:

“We shall go to the village church. There is an ancient graveyard there, as well as graves from more recent times.” So spoke our guide, Avery.

And so we set out under the cover of darkness. It was quite atmospheric too, what with howling winds and damp fog. We rode in Avery’s coach. I have no idea what his coachman thought. But then I supposed he was used to his lordship’s sudden and illicit nocturnal pursuits.

We had travelled to the other side of Mereton, to an old church. Avery swung the creaking gates open. “Those are the ancient graves,” he said, pointing toward the graves nearest the tiny church. “We shan’t be going there.”

I figured as much.

He gestured toward graves of more recent origin; quite a number in fact, although not one looked to be freshly dug.

“Are there no recent burials?” I asked.

Avery scoffed and said it mattered not. I think he was rather thrilled by my less than enthusiastic reaction. Truthfully, I cringed at the thought of him raising up stinking, moldering dead. But that is what he did.

He began chattering about how the rites are done. I could see that Eve was repelled and thrilled at the same time. Typical Eve.

We stopped at one of the graves. “This one is only a year old. It should be alright.”

I wasn’t thrilled but Eve was. “Go on!” she said. “Do start, Lord Avery.”

He got started almost immediately. The rites consisted of some rather colorful sounding incantations.

“I did learn this in France, but it is done in the Greek way. Necromancy was much practiced there in ancient times.”

Actually, I agreed with that, as both the ancient Greeks and Romans practiced it. In their case, they wished to consult the dead in order to predict the future. Necromancers like Avery had entirely different sort of reasons however..."

"In the attempt to find the just measure of horror and terror, I came upon the writing of Carole Gill whose work revealed a whole new dimension to me. The figure of the gothic child was there. Stoker's horror was there. Along with the romance! At the heart of her writing one stumbles upon a genuine search for that darkness we lost with the loss of Stoker."

Witch Hysteria, 1610 England

More from Eco's journal:

"We spoke of witch hunters and she began to tell me of the great hysteria that was now beginning to sweep England. I knew for some years the punishment for witchcraft was death, as the trials were no longer held in ecclestial courts but were now under government jurisdiction.

“The king—James—he is a great danger to those innocent wise women and men who have always been sought out for potions and cures and things. Yet now there are those that seek their destruction and the destruction of those who give them custom. I hate such people for they are responsible for this existence of mine.”

She began to explain about the king’s treatise on demons. “Yes, he wrote it
before becoming king. It is about the existence of demons. … This has given rise to witch hunters and truly, Eco, wherever there are such people there soon are vampire killers. I fear mainly for my children. My poor children.”

I had visions then of what I had seen, of the terrible destructions of my own covens. “Yes,” I said. “They are always close it seems. Have you seen any?”

Excerpt: She Must Read A Demon's Confessions

99 cents promo

"I must read the rest of Eco’s journal. I haven’t a choice. My children and I are held captive on a ship staffed by vampires, overseen by the demon, Eco—a monstrous being who calls Hell home and Satan friend. Eco, the walking embodiment of stinking corruption; enemy to man but friend to demons and undead creatures.

Eco, who has written an accounting of all of his sins committed during his existence. I am reading it now. But there is still more to read; how I shall get through it, I do not know.

He assures me has written it for me, that I might know of his great sins and forgive him—and if that is not horrible enough, he wishes me to love him. This beast from Hell wants my love!

Please, do not pull away in horror. I, too, inhabit the world of the undead as the children do. Yes, I admit it. I am a vampire raised from death, a creature of the blood. Yet I harm no one, nor do my children.

In living terms, I am younger than my little ones for my undead children lived centuries before I did—Ada and Simon perished during the witch hysteria that swept sixteenth century France.

Those days were filled with evil persecution, most of it perpetrated by people far more evil than those they singled out for slaughter.

The children were among the ones who were singled out. They died with their mother at the end of a rope before a screaming mob. Can you imagine anything as barbaric as hanging a mother and her children for witchcraft?

Still, they had escaped the flames that day. Of course, that was only because there was no more straw or wood. The populace was disappointed when the mayor announced that the ‘family of witches’ would be hanged instead of being burned. The crowd booed and threw whatever was at hand.

Louis told me this; even as he witnessed the horror, he knew what he would do. He was there watching, my beloved Louis, the righter of wrongs, the dark side’s one true saint-like being who endeavors to do less evil than himself."

London 1610, An Obsession Begins!

Eco, the demon's arrival in London.

"London had changed in nearly three hundred years, for that was when I was last there. It was bigger, noisier, and although Death was less evident than in the plague days, he still reigned supreme. I saw him and we acknowledged one another.

“There will always be a place for me,” he said. He was right, I knew, what with the great overcrowding and so much filth. Animals were herded through the streets on the way to slaughter houses, great droves of them making a weird cacophony of noise as they went along.

How the place stunk! Excrement all over the place, although it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Still, there would be another major outbreak of plague but not for some decades.

The taverns along the waterfront were full to capacity. Despite this, I managed to get a room—a flash of money and the landlord was groveling before me.
“Yes, sir. Anything you require, just ask!”

I did. I asked for two whores to be brought to me. They looked to be in a good state. Good enough to feed on, that is. One was young, about sixteen, the other at least thirty.

They were taken with me and started at once trying to entice me. But that wasn’t what I was interested in. It wasn’t their sexual favors I wished. I just wanted a good feed.

Lusty wenches, they were not opposed to some nibbling; however, when my biting grew aggressive and I began to really feed, they put up a fight.

They were easy to subdue though they fought hard for their lives. No, I wasn’t in the mood to create anything; I fed until they were drained and white, whereupon I devoured their flesh, Rose. I had a liking for it, a terrible habit I had acquired in Ancient Rome, if you remember.

I dumped whatever remained of them in the river. What’s another bundle of bones and hair to fall into that convenient body of water, I thought?

Feeling at ease, I decided to take a walk. I wasn’t going any place in particular, when I happened to notice people pushing past me as if in a great hurry to get somewhere. A lot of them too, all rushing in the same direction.

Something was happening for I heard screaming and shouting. I hurried to see what all the noise was about.

I saw them swarm, their numbers adding to a crowd of people shouting abuse at a woman. They accused her of being a witch.

In no time, they began to hurl missiles—sticks and pebbles, and whatever they could find to pelt the woman with.

The object of their hatred shouted and pleaded for mercy. Suddenly, a woman darted out from the crowd. “Stop it! Stop it!” she cried.

She looked so passionate and beautiful; I could hardly take my eyes off of her. The most startling thing about her was her appearance. Rose, she could have almost been a twin of the countess. But it was not she. This was another sort of creature altogether. Yes, creature, for she was a vampire.

A man emerged from the crowd and tried to take her back with him, but she would not go. That man was Louis! There he was, Louis and his vampiric woman.

I spotted the children at once. Yes, Rose, I saw Ada and Simon, the ageless porcelain dolls that are your own children now. They looked frightened then.
What strange vampires they were, I thought, for they seemed more human than vampiric—still, I could tell. Demon spawn such as Louis and myself…we can always tell.

Louis hustled them all away, although the exquisite vampiric woman tried to stop him. She wanted to help that other woman, I think.

He pushed her hard and said something about the children, wherein she agreed and they hurried away. Of course, I followed along..."

Book 3 of The Blackstone Vampires Series. Rose and her children's ordeal continues. They are still held captive on a ship staffed by vampires, overseen by the demon Eco. Eco claims to love her and has penned a confession of all of his sins. And so there are more blood-drenched confessions to read. Rose has no choice but to finish the journal. Eco, mad and as unpredictable as ever, can snap at any time. But will he?

The rest of the journal tells of the sick and twisted obsession Eco has had for Blackstone House's former mistress, evil and debauched Eve Darton. There are aristocratic devil rites, both in England and France, including satanic sacrifices. There is the Great Fire of London 1666, plagues, vampire destroyers, witch hunts and resurrection men who supply a necrophile doctor.

The novel comes full circle as all the hideous secrets of Blackstone House are revealed, as are the reasons Rose’s father killed himself and his family.

Dracula is introduced, as is a child cruelly orphaned by the vampires. Dracula, the child’s dying mother says, has cursed her daughter and pleads with Rose to take her. Rose does, but what hope can the hopeless have?
