Circus of Horrors is Not Just About Scary Clowns...!

99 cents NOW thru July 10
"DON'T BE FOOLED INTO THINKING THIS IS A ROUTINE, RUN-OF-THE-MILL, CARNIVAL SCARY.

NOTHING ROUTINE HERE! CIRCUS OF HORRORS is a very special story, and I'm glad it introduced me to author Carole Gill, an exceptionally talented writer."

Scary clowns are fun to write about, but I write character-driven horror. The characters in this novel and all my novels are motivated by their own experiences. They might have an agenda, a mission, as the character, 'good old carny,' Joe has. And boy what an agenda that is!

The clowns are murderous because of their childhood abuse they suffered. Each performer in Fred Dodger's sideshow has suffered and that suffering has made them what they are. Joe comes along and seems to know their secrets, all of their secrets. He even knows why Old Pa, Fred's dad, keeps a certain box close to him.

Creativia has put this book on promotion for a short time beginning now. If you like really dark, gut-wrenching horror that has a point, this is for you!

“This is horrific in the best way! It is extreme ... and disturbing!"

"Riveting. Imaginative. Chilling. Fantastical."

"Wonderful horror with a side order of ribs."

"Outstanding story line and strong characters. I felt like I was right there and a part of the sideshow.

"An awesome little creepfest!"

"Never going to the circus again!"

"True horror!"

ANOTHER FREE MURDEROUS MIDGETS STORY!

By the second story featuring Al and Hank, I felt I knew them well enough to write a full-length novel about them and the world they lived in. And what's more I wanted to! That world is what Circus of Horrors is all about. It is currently on offer for 99 cents.

GOT MY DATES MIXED UP!
THEIR DEBUT STORY WILL BE POSTED SUNDAY!!!
Here you go, enjoy:

"Freaks get bullied it's as simple as that." Baby Alice wept. "And we are freaks!"
Poor woman. She was the fat lady in the circus. And what an unhappy lady she was.Al and Hank nodded because what she said was true. Baby Alice sniffled. "You oughtta hear what this guy said to me. He's been coming around regular too. Every day nearly. What am I going to do?"
"Point him out," they said. So she did. The problem was he wasn't just a regular mug; he was the new assistant manager. You see, the circus was in the process of changing hands. And if he was bad the new owner was worse. Word spread quickly about him.
"Ain't you heard? Joe Surley bought us out! He's the worst bastard on the circuit!"
"Oh no!"
"Oh yes!"
The sword swallower and the thin man stopped speaking. They could feel someone was watching them. They turned to see a sour-faced character eyeballing them. He was the new manager, Festus McCoy.
"Care to repeat that to me?"
The men shook their heads. Festus smirked and waved them off. He had just spotted Baby Alice and she was a lot more fun to insult. "Hey fatso," he called. "Come here, I need a good laugh!"
 *
Just as predicted, the notorious Joe Surley appeared on the scene a few days later. He introduced himself in his usual manner:

"I'm running this here two-bit circus. Don't think that I won't close it down and sell off the animals for dog food if I want and you too!"

Some of the circus stars began murmuring. Surley stopped them cold.

"Look, this ain't big time. You're strictly the rejects from the bigger shows. So don't have any delusions about your worth!"
When his eyes fell upon the cowering circle of those deemed 'freaks,' he smiled: "And you messed up creeps, step outta line and I can replace you like that!" he snapped his fingers for emphasis.

Just then Al and Hank happened to walk over. They were all dressed up. They enjoyed dressing up between shows. They were movie fans and their favorite stars were the Hollywood tough guys. Paul Muni's Scarface and Edward G. Robinson's Little Caesar thrilled them.
Those in the know would have said they lived vicariously through film, becoming something different than the 3 ft. 10 inch midgets they really were.
Joe snorted. "And just what are you freaks supposed to be? You look ridiculous!" Before either one of them could say anything their new boss stormed off. But not before laying it on thick: "Freaks you are and freaks you'll always be!"
"Bastard!" Al spit out. Hank wiped his face. He was sweating. He always sweated when he was upset. And boy was he upset. Each of them had grown up in mental institutions.
Al had a police record. He pistol whipped a bully in Nashville when he was 17 and was put in the pokey for awhile. The boys, as they referred to themselves, were tough as old boots.
They were sometimes mean besides and capable of anything. Both of them had done murder, most recently last Halloween in some jerkwater place, rubbing out two old maids for what they could get.
Well times were hard in this Depression. They sold silverware and one or two other things they had come away with which was enough to buy suits and have a high old time besides. They liked dames, see?
 *
Although Surley was rubbing them wrong about a lot of things, they weren't really planning to murder him until he told them about the clown outfits. "I been thinking. I got plans for this here circus! And we'll start with youse two! See I want you to be clowns! You're clowns anyway, so you might as well dress the part.
When Surley left the boys smiled."You know what we're going to have to do, right?"
Sure, they knew. They waited until the following Sunday. Joe always drank himself to sleep on Sundays because there were no shows on Monday. That's when they dropped one of his cigarettes onto his mattress. They had splashed the place with kerosene too; well they wanted to finish the job in the right way. Al lit the match. "Fucker."

The boys watched the fire for a while.

"Shame we couldn't cut his throat. I love to do that."

They both did, nothing like a good old crimson torrent.

"We can't always do what we want." Hank said. He was wise, that Hank.
*
The screech of sirens tore through the night air. All the circus people were huddled together in their night clothes. No one said they were glad. Mostly they didn't speak much about it other than to wonder what would happen to the circus and to them.
Baby Alice was worried though. "Geesh, I hope McCoy don't take it over."
She needn't have worried since they arrested Festus McCoy the next day. Well, they found him with a lot of matches and an empty can of kerosene.
The cops thought it was pretty obvious as to what he had done.
As for Al and Hank they just knew they were lucky it was another jerkwater town and not much was checked in such burgs."Yup," Al said. "We ain't never gonna kill in a big city."
"You're right," Hank answered. "Only we ought to go to Coney Island next week, I hear they're hiring."
"Okay, swell but look, no matter what happens we won't kill there."
"We'll work hard and try to get laid."
"You said it, brother, I'm always up for that!"

About House of Horrors!

An anthology of stories that appeared in various anthologies

The stories contained within I had a lot of fun writing. I have some favorites, like Monster Inside which was inspired by a marriage from hell (my first marriage).

Each story was inspired by something. A few were inspired by serial killers. The most infamous, Jack the Ripper. In fact there are three about THE RIPPER. In one I identify him!

There are themed stories for Halloween, Christmas and New Year's. Those tend to be darkly humorous.

One story I'm particularly proud of is about how evil spreads. A child knows evil has come to her house in her village. The story evolves and what it turns out to be is pretty shocking I think. There's another story that is connected to that evil, that is pretty creepy. I wrote it because of actual horrific practices that certain sadistic lunatics indulged in.

There really are monsters among us. Some of us marry them, know them, work for them, have them  as neighbors. What's road rage, but a monster driving a car who shows his/her true colors? That's the bit that both entices and scares me. Murderous psychopaths don't necessarily look different. Who knows what goes on inside someone's head?

Don't get me wrong, I have supernatural monsters in the collection, too! There are zombies, werewolves and vampires. But there's more diverse ones as well.

Before you go, here's a review snippet:

“I fear we too are dying, for we live with madness.” The nightmarishly beautiful prose is but one reason to venture into the unnerving catacombs of House of Horrors, an anthology of short genre excursions by the indomitable Carole Gill. From a storm-shrouded lighthouse to the foggy realms of haunted forests and even a jaunt through Whitechapel, Carole Gill lulls you into her gothic web, masterfully weaving for you a series of nightmarish tales to unease your dreary nights. She is the contemporary incarnation of the storyteller at the fire, and we gather in the light of the flickering flame wide-eyed and eager to listen.

Halloween Comes Early! 99 cents October 30 Friday!

What kind of toys does a Satanic toy maker make? How about this cute bunny? Don't you love it!

"They called him the Great Carelli, master of magick and sorcerer extraordinaire. Carelli was a great showman and if that wasn’t enough, he was also a gifted toymaker. His dolls were much sought after. Sadly they were; sadly, because Carelli was also an avowed Satanist and had been for centuries.

“Bah! Satanism! They have it all wrong! The only true things are the pacts.” He recalled his own, made long ago in a cave in Europe; one of the many gateways to hell. Yes, those are genuine.
“I will serve you always Master!” There’s a hell of a lot of bright light and the shadowy figure of he who was known as Satan.

“Go forth and do my bidding.”

He did and he would. And why not? He’d live forever after all, not a bad trade off as he saw it. Besides, what was a soul worth? You go to church all your life and when you die you’re food for the worms. He couldn’t see it.

There was logic there and Satan was pleased. “You will continue with your pursuits.”

And so he did, but instead of fashioning ordinary dolls he made magical ones; very special dolls he had blessed with his own breath, beautiful dolls to do Satan’s work. Well perhaps not that beautiful, it was the eyes. They looked as though they opened into hell with the glint of madness and depravity. Still, they appealed and that’s what counted..."

VAMPIRES ON THE MOORS!

99 cents on offer!

Her suspicions aroused, Rose Baines steals out of Blackstone House to see what hellish things are going on.

"I stole out to the moors in the direction of the altar stone. I stood there for some moments wondering where they had all gone, but then I noticed what looked like a tunnel. I could hear laughter and talking--screams and other sounds too, coming from somewhere deep inside. I decided to see what was happening.

It was dark but there were candles about. I continued on toward the sound. People moved about somewhere close by, sending flickering shadows along the walls ahead of me.

Creeping along a little more I saw chambers—enclosed areas filled with cushions and people… people doing things to one another.

I didn’t realize what they were doing at first but then I did, and I nearly cried out. Handsomely dressed men and women lay prostrate on the makeshift beds, offering their necks, their arms, their bodies, so that their mates – black-clothed figures – could bite into their flesh and drink their blood!

I watched in horror while the victims moaned with ecstasy while the predators licked the flowing blood from their skin. They loved it so much, they called out for the most indecent things to be done to them.

Then the clothing was discarded and men and women in all sorts of combinations began to pleasure one another.

Meanwhile they continued to feast on one another, and those they feasted on were screaming their delight!

I turned to run, but someone grabbed me. I managed to break free, and started to run as fast as I could.

I did finally emerge back onto the moors, only to be grabbed again and pushed to the ground. A girl held me down, a girl I recognized, a girl whose chin was caked in blood.
She was Imogene, the nasty one from the club. She reached for me and bent over me. “I will show you pleasure, I will show you worlds you cannot imagine!”

“No! No!” I cried, somehow managing to break away from her. I ran again as fast as I could. She chased after me but suddenly stopped to sniff the air. She then fell upon the ground.

At first I didn’t realize what she was doing, I only understood when she looked up and smiled. “Virgin blood, sweet to the taste!”
I don’t remember screaming. All I know is I was soon surrounded by a sea of anxious faces."

99 CENTS! UNHOLY TESTAMENT - THE BEGINNINGS

ECO, WINNER eFestival of Words, 2014 BEST VILLAIN is featured!

Books 1 and 2 of The Blackstone Vampires features a villain called Eco. Eco is beyond a bad-ass. He is a demon cursed with madness. Why the madness? Well, Eco can distinguish truth from lies.

He won for best villain (The House on Blackstone Moor) at eFESTIVAL of words, 2014

He became so popular because of the first book, I agreed to do a second featuring him. That was a real challenge. How can a demonic being with no good in him, be the star of his own book? What kind of story would he tell?

He tells plenty, in fact, his story is immense. It spills over into Book 3, Unholy Testament - Full Circle.

But let's take a look at this book which is priced at 99 cents (thank you, Creativia).

Eco, swearing his love for Rose (The House on Blackstone Moor) has penned a confession listing all the sins he has committed in the course of his immortal existence. He demands she read this document. She does, she has to. He is keeping her prisoner on board a ship staffed by vampires, commandeered by him. She has no choice, her children are with her.

BLURB:

Rose and her children find themselves held captive on a ship staffed by vampires, overseen by the mad and evil demon Eco. The last time Rose saw Eco he tried to destroy the children, and now he tells her he loves her.

“I saw you leave the house that day, Rose. That terrible day you discovered your family butchered. I saw you…”
Eco, believing he has fallen in love with her, pens a confession documenting all sins he has committed during his immortal existence.

From Ancient Egyptian vampire cults, Roman vampire brothels, The Dark Ages, The Crusades, The Black Death of 1348, on to his meeting with the child murderer and Satanist Gilles de Rais, and concluding with his wicked, blood-soaked affair with the Blood Countess herself, Erzebat Bathory. The pages are filled with debauchery, vice and murder – how can one stained with so much blood and evil possibly be trusted?

A Bit of the Ripper

"I felt like an artist admiring my handiwork, she was after all my creation, an exquisite corpse. In life some would have said she was pretty. I, myself, didn’t share that opinion. I could see the bog in her, the stinking midden, which flowed too near to her birth place I could see and smell that as well.

Yet when I first saw her move with the unmistakable sauntering gait of the street walker, I was fascinated, the way a lion might be staring at his prey.

I smiled and said something. She took my interest as flattering, my conversation as exciting. I saw a smile and flash of her teeth, still intact because she was young.

“Alone darling?”

Darling! What effrontery. Had she known who I was she’d have died! How ironic, don’t you think?

“Ooh you are a gent, ain’t ya?  Look dear! I don’t live far. Just this way. Miller’s Court, see?”

It was late—few people were about even on these disease ridden streets. So we walked along, just she and I, both full of happy expectation.

Her lodgings were grim and disgusting. A broken window with a piece of fabric shoved inside it to keep the cold out.

“Step in whilst I light the fire.”

The room was so tiny the door could not open properly.  Her bed seemed to fill up the place, a busy bed no doubt.

“I‘ll just put this on...”

I turned in order not to see her tawdry preparations.

 “Alright then.”

She was wearing a gaudy, nearly threadbare chemise, long past its best, a gift perhaps made cheap from overuse. I think she thought I was shy. “That’s right, ducks you just relax. I’ll stretch out on me bed and wait, that’ll give you time.”
I smiled too as I reached for my friend: Mr. Sharp and Ready—a pleasant sort of chap if you don’t rile him.

The women rile him—some women that is.

Some kind of instinct must have alerted her for she suddenly opened her eyes..."

Undying Friendship

EXCERPT: while on promo 99cents.

"Louis worked the night shift at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was a porter. It wasn’t bad because as any night shifter will tell you it tends to be a quiet shift. Most of the patients are asleep, there’s fewer staff and even the big shot doctors aren’t around.

Louis hated those arrogant pricks because they thought they were better than everyone else. A lot of them talked down to him. The worst of the lot was the Chief of Staff. Christ, Louis hated him.

Even the nurses spoke down to him: ordering him around like he was piece of crap.

“I got dignity too you know! I count! I’m a person!”

He had filed a complaint once or twice with Human Resources, not that they cared because they were even worse, especially that supercilious director who always made Louis squirm.

“I’ll see what I can do, Louis.”

“Thank you.”

“Thank you for coming here.”

Louis always skulked out of the office feeling worse than when he went in.
The only person in the world who was kind to him was his friend, Tito. Only Tito Sanchez was lying in the hospital morgue dead of a drug overdose.

Just 24 hours ago, Louis had seen them carry him out in one of those big black plastic bags.

“Got another one for our meat wagon.”

Louis’ head snapped around when he heard that gem. That said from one of the attendants to the other one.

“He was my friend!”

“Oh yeah. Sorry fella.”

He watched the damned thing drive silently away. No reason for a siren, not now.

“Bye Tito.”

The truth was he loved Tito. Not in a faggy way, but in a real hero kind of way. He looked up to him the way a kid does to his older brother.

Tito could do no wrong in Louis’ eyes. If there was one person in the world that could make everything right it was Tito.

Louis laid awake plenty of nights worried about him and his drug taking. That was one thing Louis never touched.

He tried speaking to his friend but nothing he said helped. After a while he gave up. That’s when he had the feeling.

Tito’s death was not entirely unexpected because Louis had a premonition. He was like that. He had been since he was little. Sometimes he knew what someone was going to say or do before they did it.

Mostly he didn’t care. It didn’t work for important stuff like lottery numbers or guessing at cards. It was just a skill of sorts. Something he could do—the only thing he was good at.

And if Louis could sometimes sense something, others could too. Like they could sense what Louis was thinking.

Tito had told him it was as though Louis was sending out a signal.

“I don’t know what it is, Louis. I ain’t psychic or nothin’ but I think you might be. Maybe not in the way people think about such stuff. I think more it’s vibes or somethin’ your brain sends out.”

Louis was flattered. It was something to latch onto, something nice. Not like his life.

He didn’t have much of a life at twenty eight. His father had disappeared when Louis was a kid. This caused his mother to have a kind of break down in the old cabeza. She was no one to talk to. Now with Tito gone he was more alone than ever.

The idea to raise Tito up came to him when he was feeding his cat, Bart. He had been reading his favorite paper, the one that had those stories about Elvis on the moon and UFO’s landing in the Pentagon.

The story that got him going told how some guy in England had raised his friend from the dead.

“Bart man, that’s it.”

The cat didn’t give a fuck. He had eaten and wanted to take a piss in his litter tray or against the wall if he felt like it.

Louis began to re-read the article."

Excerpt, Show and Tell Would Never Be The Same

"He was a solitary little boy, morose and distrustful of others. He hadn’t always been that way. He felt his parents used to love him but then it all seemed to change as if they changed.

Sometimes he’d catch his mother looking at him, as if she was sorry he was there. Her eyes were full of hurt and some kind of pain or was it something else, something she didn’t wish to tell him?

Maybe it was a secret she shared with his father. He didn’t know. He hoped things would get better but they didn’t. They got worse when his mom’s tummy got big.

“You’re going to have a baby brother or sister won’t that be nice?”

He used to nod and say sure because he thought it would be but then he wasn’t too certain because he didn’t understand the questioning look in his mother’s eyes.

“I hope it’s an easier birth. Yours wasn’t.”

How flat and annoyed her voice sounded every time she said that and she said it a lot.

His father spoke to him once; only once not twice, he counted.

“You okay son, is everything alright?”

He opened his mouth to spill his guts and to at last unburden himself but his father looked worried. It was as if whatever was up with his mother had rubbed off on his dad.

“Well here you go.”

His father smiled and gave him an extra fifty cents to buy a comic book. That’s all he had really--his comic books and his bike.

They gave him the bike for Christmas and he loved it. He thought of it as a peace offering.

"Next year this time there will be a little stranger here, but not a stranger for long."

Eventually the stranger came with his mother. Actually he had liked her being away even if it was only for a few days. A neighbor stayed with him. She was all excited.

“Nothing like a new baby coming home!”

Yeah big deal. The first sight of it made him want to puke. It was wrinkled and ugly and it screamed and if that wasn’t bad enough his parents were always looking at it and talking to it.

He never saw his mother without that thing in her arms or on her lap. All around him were bottles and diapers, dirty stinking diapers and a big pail she threw them into.

He retreated; he backed away from the whole lousy thing, from the ugly screamer and his parents and he immersed himself in his hobby.

He liked to study things, learn about things; nature and animals. And it was good because he could be a doctor someday.

His parents would be proud of him and so would the kids at school and what about his teacher?

He wouldn’t let them know though; he wanted to surprise them all; to keep it a secret thereby making it more dramatic when the moment would come and all would be revealed.

Meanwhile he’d work in private in the shed out back.

His father didn’t use it anymore. Hell he hadn’t even been inside it for more than a year which kind of made it his shed.

He loved the way the door whined open and the dark mustiness hit him. It was great being in his own private place.

Last week in school the teacher announced a special Show and Tell. She wanted everyone to know about it.

“We all have secrets, secrets we don’t wish anyone to know and sometimes we have secret places where we keep something, something we want to keep private.

That was true. If the shed was accessible to anyone, his secret pursuits weren’t. He kept them under lock and key in an old suitcase under the floorboards.

What kid didn’t have a place to stash his prized possessions?

Only last week on TV he saw a show about a boy with a secret hiding place. The boy kept all of his comic books there so his brother wouldn’t tear them up or slobber over them because the brother was younger.

He’d probably have to face those sorts of things when his own brother got a little older. He was pleased about the suitcase because it was light enough to carry to school for Show and Tell.

He could just picture the moment when he opened it up: the gasps and cheers and applause.

It was going to be hard to get through the week and wait for Show and Tell.
He finally lived to see Tuesday, it wasn’t easy. But he had and he was in school ready to go.

Nearly everyone commented on his suitcase. Most of it nasty and spiteful.
He just smiled. “You’ll see!"

The teacher even looked impressed.

His turn came third. The teacher motioned him up to the front.

“For Show and Tell today I have brought my collection, it’s a hobby you see. My parents don’t know about it no one does.”

“We’ll know!”

One of his worst tormentors shouted out. The teacher shushed him but he only sniggered.

At last it came time to open the case. So he did. He wasn’t prepared for the look of horror on everyone’s face; horror and retching.

And if that wasn’t bad enough the teacher was shaking. “Get that out of here. Take it out at once.”

What was wrong with her, this was a big deal; he had revealed his greatest secret..."

Review:

"There is no doubt that she soars above the endless parade of independent horror authors to shine as a true star in the darkness. With the brilliant anthology House of Horrors she proves why she is a perennial favorite. To put it simply, this is a great assembly of tales anyone would be proud to have in their collection"

Excerpt: Some Women Are Married to Monsters

Promo 99 cents!

Excerpt:

"The party is an ordeal, but she’s got enough Valium and Vodka in her to make it a surreal experience she can get through. She smiles, frozenly and nods occasionally and then the stupid bastards finally leave. “I’m going upstairs.”

Ah, but he doesn’t want her to, because he’s pissed off. Maybe something one of the men said, and since he won’t take anything out on anyone else, least of all a man, he focuses his fury on her.

At some point she does escape. Somehow she manages to even doze a little. But then she hears him moving around below. Her one wish is that he’ll fall asleep drunk and maybe she’ll have a few hours in the welcoming dark to rest.

Sleep is more elusive than ever—normal sleep—although there’s that lovely deep, dark haze that sometimes comes to carry her off in its painless embrace—don’t knock respite even if it is brief.

Her thinking is muddy now—she’s losing it, she knows.

A smile curls her pale lips, better to lose it—better to sink into some eternal oblivion where she won’t care anymore.

The room is cold, he won’t put the heating on—he likes to think of her huddled up there—curled up in an icy ball, suffering—enduring.

She falls asleep or passes out, the relevance is irrelevant.

Later she awakens, stands up on shaky legs and looks at the door. It must be locked. There isn’t any reason to check he’s not forgetful.

A crash from downstairs—and she jumps, startled—clutching her bony chest. Her eyes light with a rare glimmer of expectation. That crash, did he fall down? Is he lying down dead, his monster’s head smashed open like an overripe melon?

But the hope is fleeting. “No,” she reasons, he probably just dropped something.

She waits—but there’s nothing, no other sound. She walks on trembling legs to patter over to the door to listen. The TV’s on, she can hear it.

The doorknob—like a magical orb—waiting to be turned, waiting to lead her into; into what, the Promised Land? Hardly. Yet, stupid creature that she is, she reaches out to feel its smoothness.

I only want to feel it—it’s not as though I think it would actually turn! But the knob does turn—and her breath catches in her throat. It’s open! He hasn’t locked it! Dare she?

She dares. Soon, she is treading slowly—creeping along an inch at a time. Don’t let the floorboards creak!

She leans over the banister—there’s nothing to see. Just his briefcase he put down earlier from work. Briefcase! His work colleagues don’t know him like she does!

She pauses at the stairs, waiting—too afraid not to be waiting. Donald?

His name, not out loud of course, it’s only in her head.

She’s half-way down the stairs when suddenly she stops—she can hear him now, moving around in the kitchen.

Something leads her down the stairs—her will (somehow regained) perhaps—and she finds herself standing in the doorway. He’s bent over, looking in the fridge. He spins around.

She falls back—he’s covered in blood—blood down his arms and chest—and all over his mouth. He throws the food down and smiles, but his teeth look different, they’re yellow and pointed.

“Just snacking!”

Her eyes lock onto the thing lying near his foot—the sandwich. But then she screams because it isn’t a sandwich! It’s…! He reaches over and picks it up.

“Young, best when they’re young, darling!”
