Vampire Entertainment at Cleopatra's Court!

Eco, the demon--having fallen in love with Rose Baines, The House on Blackstone Moor, or so he says, has penned a confession of all of his sins to demonstrate is honesty. By so doing, he hopes to gain her confidence. This is his recollection of an orgy at Cleopatra's palace.

“The Queen and Antony will be there. They are enthused about magic. Wait until they see what else you do!” The palace was opulent; in truth I hadn’t expected it to be so fantastic, what with its great colonnades and spectacularly tiled floors. We passed down a long hall; in the center of which were great shimmering pools and fountains. As we walked along, we began to hear the most haunting music.

It was light and pleasing to the ear and I told Faruk. “They are the palace musicians,” he announced proudly. “The Queen’s own favorites.” The Queen! Where was she? Faruk saw how excited I must have looked and he smiled. “Look there,” he said. “You see?” I turned and my eyes at last beheld her.

She was dazzling; far more beautiful than I expected. She wore a draped dress of white linen—her shawl looked golden. That is, it had what appeared to be glittering threads woven into the cloth. Around her throat, she wore a jeweled collar. I had never seen such stones for they seemed to have a life of their own. Her hair, as black as ebony, was done up in an intricate design of tendrils; there was no mistaking she was a queen. We were motioned forward by a eunuch.

He was quite tall and beautifully garbed. He bowed his head and asked us to proceed. “Her magnificence wishes you to come forward!” The queen acknowledged us with a little smile. Antony, handsome in his Roman finery, sat near her. He gazed coolly upon me but had a special smile for my wenches. If Cleopatra noticed, she didn’t show she had. “And what will you do for us?” she asked. This was not a command but a coquettish sounding question. I smiled. “Magic, your magnificence. I will dazzle you with it!”

She nodded for me to begin. I started simply. I didn’t wish to overwhelm her, so I conjured small winged creatures. There were gasps and applause, so I conjured more. I created wind and fire, too, which caused alarm at first but then joy and amazement at how easily I controlled my magic. All of this magic I had learned from Imtep. Yes, I am most grateful to him. My conjuring went on for some time but when I felt the moment right, I called for Ankata to enter. “The Priestess, Ankata!”

Near pandemonium erupted in the place. People stood to see her. She came in and bowed. The place went wild, and even Cleopatra applauded. Ankata had never looked more beautiful. She was dressed in lilac colored linen, so sheer, she looked nude. She bowed to the Queen and walked to my side. I reached out and drew her veil down so that she was naked. I disrobed, too, and gently pushed her to the floor. We made love first, easy and gentle, just fondling one another. But then we began to feed on each other, in the most amazing of places. The spectators were thrilled and shocked. I heard their gasps and whispers.

None of them enjoyed it more than Lucius Aratas—a Roman official Faruk had told me about. The wenches came out next. They were entirely nude. The men followed, and soon they began feeding and copulating with them. It seemed there was no difference between the feeding and the orgiastic pleasure they gave one another.

Cheers rang out as the Romans, initiated by Antony, shouted their approval. Cleopatra laughed whereupon Antony took her right there where they were seated. Others joined in until the entire room was one big orgy with Scaba and the wenches pleasuring each other and any man that wished it. I never saw so many naked bodies copulating as they were.

Shrieks of pleasure resounded in the hall— such that I’d never heard. Even the eunuchs joined in, pleasuring one another in wild abandon. It went on for hours. People only stopped when they were satiated. It was as Faruk had said—desires of the blood. Odd that sexual excitement transpires from vampiric feeding, is it not, Rose? At daybreak, Antony summoned me. He wished to know my name and something about me, where I was from, and so on. “I told him I was from Antioch. He asked me what I was about. I think strangely enough he thought me to have eyes for the Queen. I smiled and said I wished to take my troupe to Rome for I dreamt of the place and had done for a number of years.

He looked quite impressed with that. He was not only handsome but also arrogant. “Yes, Rome is the beginning and end of everything. Tell me,” he added. “Are you not staying? Are you intending to go soon?” I think he asked this hoping it was soon, for he had seen the way Cleopatra watched me. “It will be very soon,” I said. He looked relieved. “Do make plans to travel. I am certain you will sail for Rome before you know it!” I thanked him and as I turned to go, he called me back. “In the interim, could you leave a few of your wenches? Faruk will show you where to send them. I quite fancy them.”

He shocked me, Rose, as humans often do. Later, Faruk introduced me to Lucius Aratas. He was quite a handsome man, tall and distinguished looking. He looked every inch the aristocrat he was. “I have watched you,” he said. “You must tell me of your plans. I could not help but to overhear that you are leaving for Rome.” I agreed that I was. “That is good. I shall escort you there, if you will permit me.”

We shook hands then. His touch was interesting; I cannot always say I have an inkling about a person just from their touch, but I did rather have it about Lucius. I thought him most promising. For all of Faruk’s many gifts, I offered him the gift of immortality. He fell to his knees and wept. “Master, I cannot speak, I am so honored.” “Then you shall listen. I have seen how you look at Scaba, and I cannot part you two. She is yours forever if you wish it.”

He fell prostrate before me and wept, but these tears were of joy. And so I did create him and he fed upon myself and Ankata and Scaba, too. Then they fell about making love, for they were so entranced with one another. We would leave the next day. As for Faruk, he and Scaba were to remain in Alexandria because it was his city. From what I understand, they had many successful vampire brothels. Scaba, as wanton as she was, came to care for Faruk and as far as I know, she may care for him still.

And so we left the glittering Alexandria behind. Our destination was Rome. Rome, the city of cities—the new power in the world. I could not wait to see it for I knew much of my destiny awaited me there. And it did, Rose. Oh my, yes it did..."

CAN A DEMONIC CREATURE LOVE?

Can monsters? Can vampires feel love and passion?  I think most readers of paranormal and Gothic fiction would agree they can.
But can they love without being 'good'? In other words, can thoroughly evil, vicious, demonic creatures such as demons and vampires actually 'love?'
Why not, everyone has their good and darkside? Sound silly? Well, let's consider!
For those of us who like real, dark villains, not pouty vampire ones, this is a question we like to consider.
Can't there be a part of a monster that actually can love? I think there can be. I think the tragedy of the monster suddenly feeling something that tames him and mellows him even if it is for a short time, is to be explored, developed and written about because it's interesting!
Those of us who adore Coppola's film of Dracula know what that means. I've blogged about it before.

In fact, I was inspired to write The Fourth Bride (of Dracula) because of that film!
In my novel, just as in the film, Dracula is not diminished in the least. He kills and corrupts, he is evil, he is hellish but he is also tragic.
He loved once as a human being and he loves again, not just those lusty 'brides' of his, but the profound love he felt in his living life he experiences again when he sees Mina in the film and Dia in my novel.

And by the way, this, the fourth book in my series can
be read as a standalone. The Fourth Bride
This question of a demon feeling love, spawned two books. Those two books are Unholy Testament - The Beginnings and Unholy Testament - Full Circle
Make no mistake about it, Eco was a vicious blood monster in the first book, The House on Blackstone Moor. He raped my heroine and would have taken her to hell with him.
However! It is in both volumes of Unholy Testament that he explains how he did this when, in fact, he had fallen in love with her! Hence, his confession to her which is what both these books are about.
This is a complex demonic vampire. This is an intelligent, corrupt being who has killed and destroyed and wallowed in sin, but who has felt love in the course of his immortal existence.
I am dedicated to pushing the boundaries with my fiction. I want to see what I can do, where it can go, where I can lead the reader. That's what this, my dark Gothic romantic fiction is all about!

FUN WITH MAD EMPEROR, CALIGULA! DEMON ECO'S BUDDY!

DURING 99CENTS PROMO!
More confessions from a demon
From Eco's Journal:

I asked him how the brothel was. His face lit up. “It is better than ever. Busier than ever, too. The old man is on his way out, Eco.”
He meant of course Tiberius.

“Yes.” He went on. “We’re all bored with him. But I must tell you what I have discovered! He has the most amazing nephew; actually, he is his adopted grandson. This fellow is a handsome rascal and as wild as they come. You should see what he gets up to! If anyone was a natural for a vampire, it is he!”

I was intrigued and asked to meet this young man. “What do they call him?”

“Caligula,” Pulinius replied.
*
My coven was delighted to see me and greeted me warmly, stripping down and doing all sorts of things to beguile me to bed them—which of course I did, and I did it without feeling guilty about Ankata. Besides, Ankata had been a lusty wench sharing herself with all of them, whatever their sex.

I bedded several of the wenches at once with Pulinius joining in. Actually, he not only joined in with them, he coupled with the beautiful young male vampires we had as well, allowing them to feed upon him wherever they liked.

Pulinius was a daring character for he never cared how much blood he lost through his varied and sometimes surprising sexual machinations. It was surprising it hadn’t killed him.

I did meet Caligula and he was even wilder than I had imagined. He was a voracious sexual beast, a human with an appetite for sex and degradation that was unsurpassed.

I agreed that if ever there was a natural for vampiric creation, it was he. He was there almost every day, cavorting and having the time of his life. But when he wasn’t there, some days went by and Pulinius commented that Caligula must be up to something.

He was, for suddenly Tiberius was dead. Almost immediately after, Caligula summoned us to the palace to tell us exactly which poison he had used.

“You should have seen it! It was so fantastic! In a moment, poof! My problem was gone!”

It most certainly was and he saw to it, for he was now what he wanted to be—Emperor of Rome, an all-powerful ruler who intended to carry on with his debauched lifestyle.

We did our part. We began to supply him with wenches but he still came to the brothel as well. He liked to get out and about, he said.

His antics were wild and became increasingly wilder as the years passed. Eventually, he made his palace into a giant brothel.

I liked him so much, I happened to tell him of my parentage. You see, I planned to create him. Well, it was something he wished and I thought he deserved the honor.

And so, to prepare him I told him of the war in Heaven. It meant nothing to him; however, he did understand the concept of being a god.

“You are a god!” he shouted. “I am one too, you know.”

I tried to look suitably impressed but really, it only confirmed what I thought—Caligula was suffering from madness even greater than my own!

Well, it takes one to know one.

“I tell you what!" I said. "As a God, you will be able to outdo me with one hand tied behind your back! How does that sound?"

He looked thrilled. “I know! I will command the senator's wives to participate in a sexual contest! They would never dare to refuse me and to make it even more fun, we will have this performed in front of the entire Senate!"

I was incredulous but tried not to show it.

So it happened, and it was great fun. I think, though, it rather hurried his assassination along for almost immediately after it, the young man was done away with. His elite Palatine Guard had been bribed, paid handsomely to assassinate him.

Sadly, this occurred before I created him. You see, despite ‘being a god,’ he did wish to be a vampire. We had arranged for the creation but our plans went awry and he was done to death as they say.

I didn’t see it myself, but I heard about it.

“Even as he was run through with the sword, he was shocked he wasn’t a god. ‘I die,’ he said. And so he did.”

EXCERPT: A Demon's Confession

99 cents promo:  Unholy Testament - The Beginnings

"I am the demon, Eco. I begin at the beginning, that is, my own beginning. There was hardly a time when the world did not know my name or the nature of my existence.

I have been feared, hated and condemned to Hell. Yet, what is Hell to me but another place I call home?

Demon though I am, my roots are in heaven; my father’s former stomping ground for Father was one of God’s own angels, as Louis’ father was. Sad to say, they backed the losing side for they chose Lucifer. Yes, he who is called Satan now was Lucifer before the fall.

You know whereof I speak. That great fall from grace—the plunge away from the light of God and all that goes with it. Louis has told you already of the battle in Heaven and of the sides that were taken.

They were banished for it. No more were they to see Heaven’s light, nor be amongst their angelic brethren. No, they were to be punished severely.

“Go now, you pestilence, follow he whom you have chosen as master!”

And so they fell to Earth and Lucifer fell with them.

“I saw him fly past. I never took my eyes off of him!” So was my father’s testimony to me.

But if his supporters found themselves on Earth, Lucifer did not.

They watched horror-struck as a great chasm opened.

“See how he falls into it!” they cried.

“Yes,” my father told me. “We could see the flames and feel the heat. He looked up at us once before he vanished. His shout was like a thousand knives: “You will know me as Satan now! Satan forever condemned to exist apart from mankind!”

Excerpt: Feeding Frenzy!

"Several people were swarming around something on the floor. I was reminded of that horrid night on the moors when I stumbled upon vampires feeding.

Were these people vampires? I recognized them; the young golden haired man and the elderly couple as well as others. Each of them covered in blood, caked in the stuff!

“Come, my dear. There is enough to go around,” Lillian said gently, urging me to partake of the feed.

They began to move away so I could see what was on the floor. At first I couldn’t take it in. But then I saw what it was.

They had been feeding on a naked girl! Her body was streaked in blood yet still more blood poured from her. She vanished from sight as the group began to feed once again..."

99 CENTS! UNHOLY TESTAMENT - THE BEGINNINGS

ECO, WINNER eFestival of Words, 2014 BEST VILLAIN is featured!

Books 1 and 2 of The Blackstone Vampires features a villain called Eco. Eco is beyond a bad-ass. He is a demon cursed with madness. Why the madness? Well, Eco can distinguish truth from lies.

He won for best villain (The House on Blackstone Moor) at eFESTIVAL of words, 2014

He became so popular because of the first book, I agreed to do a second featuring him. That was a real challenge. How can a demonic being with no good in him, be the star of his own book? What kind of story would he tell?

He tells plenty, in fact, his story is immense. It spills over into Book 3, Unholy Testament - Full Circle.

But let's take a look at this book which is priced at 99 cents (thank you, Creativia).

Eco, swearing his love for Rose (The House on Blackstone Moor) has penned a confession listing all the sins he has committed in the course of his immortal existence. He demands she read this document. She does, she has to. He is keeping her prisoner on board a ship staffed by vampires, commandeered by him. She has no choice, her children are with her.

BLURB:

Rose and her children find themselves held captive on a ship staffed by vampires, overseen by the mad and evil demon Eco. The last time Rose saw Eco he tried to destroy the children, and now he tells her he loves her.

“I saw you leave the house that day, Rose. That terrible day you discovered your family butchered. I saw you…”
Eco, believing he has fallen in love with her, pens a confession documenting all sins he has committed during his immortal existence.

From Ancient Egyptian vampire cults, Roman vampire brothels, The Dark Ages, The Crusades, The Black Death of 1348, on to his meeting with the child murderer and Satanist Gilles de Rais, and concluding with his wicked, blood-soaked affair with the Blood Countess herself, Erzebat Bathory. The pages are filled with debauchery, vice and murder – how can one stained with so much blood and evil possibly be trusted?

Upcoming Promotion: Unholy Testament - The Beginnings

Excerpt, Unholy Testament - The Beginnings, Book2 In The Blackstone Vampires Series

Promo May 30 - June 5

Chapter 12:
"The magic that was Egypt in those days was a thing truly to behold. This exotic jewel of the desert was kissed by many gods. Their god, Osiris, was the Nile and his wife, Isis, was Egypt. And when the river overflowed its banks, the land bore fruit for it was blessed. That blessing brought forth the first harvests.

I journeyed throughout the land, admiring the great pyramids that had begun to be erected. Do you know how beautiful it was to watch the sunset over those majestic structures; to see the sand turn to dark amber under a purple sky? Its beauty was beyond words. And because I was so drawn to that beauty, I decided to dwell in the desert for a time. I loved being there. I thought of the night sky and often dreamt under it, counting the stars and probably wishing upon them as well.

I came upon them one star filled night. I saw two figures crouched in the semi-darkness, feasting on some dumb animal they caught, a deer, I think. Suddenly they became aware of my presence. They sprang at me, first one and then the other—each in turn biting into my neck. I brushed them aside as I would a fly.

“No!” I cried. “I am made of stronger stuff! I am like you, though I am indestructible!”
I think the girl believed me but not the boy. He kept attacking me. I merely pushed him away. Suddenly the girl cried out and several vampires appeared. They growled and grimaced and tried to scare me off for they hadn’t yet decided how dangerous I was.
Most of them stood back, only one or two inched forward as if to test me, daring me to attack first. I knew they were measuring my response.

Suddenly, another being appeared; I say ‘being’ because these others were lowly next to her. I thought she was either a goddess or a priestess of some kind for her bearing was regal. There, in the light of the moon, I beheld her face. She was the most magnificent creature I had ever seen, perfect in form and—more alluring than any wench I had ever bedded. She was dressed simply in white linen with no adornments or I’d have thought her a princess.

I opened my mouth to speak but she put up a hand, stilling my tongue. Then she stepped closer to appraise me more carefully. I thought she’d attack me but she didn’t. Instead, she fell to her knees and then, with her arms stretched forward, she bowed in obedience for she knew she had met a greater being than herself.
At last she glanced up at me. “I am Ankata, your servant.”
She was, I realized, the mistress of a coven, whatever she called herself. In reality, she was only the head of a coven of snarling, raggedy looking vampires.
She shooed them away and laughed. I had never heard such a pleasing sound. It was musical, like the song of a bird.

“They will be alright, they can be grumpy.” She motioned for me to follow her. “In here,” she said, pointing toward a cave. It seemed to stretch endlessly. She turned her head once or twice to smile at me. “Not much further…”
I remember thinking how safe it seemed, safe and deliberately so, hidden away from the world of the living.

At last we reached the living quarters. “Father and I live here.”
There were great clusters of candles and all manner of adornments—statues and vases. I think I gasped whereupon she smiled. “It is our home.”
“And magnificent it is, too.” I replied.

And it was, for it looked fit for royalty. It was remarkable, spacious and furnished with sofas and chairs. It was quite amazing. She began to speak but paused for her father had entered. Now, for the first time, I beheld a most spectacular being. He was tall and slender, his head shaven as if he were a priest. At first I thought he was, but then I took a good look at his apparel.

This was no ordinary man. He was dressed as an aristocrat. He wore the traditional kalarsiris robe belted over a loin skirt. He was most imposing, yet what was truly eye-catching was his collar which was actually a scarab of turquoise and gold, fashioned beautifully. As he came closer, I found I nearly backed away! It was his eyes. Not only were they large and dark, their expression was so intense, I nearly squirmed.

Suddenly Ankata asked: “Why do you come, Eco?”
I knew I had not told her my name—yet she knew it.
I nodded. “Yes,” I replied. “I am Eco.”

She was watching the fearful being that was her father. “My father, Imtep.”
He smiled then. His darkly piercing eyes seemed to soften a bit when he did. I think he was amused at my discomfiture. Then in one smooth motion, he sank to his knees. Ankata looked overcome. I was overwhelmed. “Please, I am not a god; I am a different sort of being…” I said.
“From the light world…”
“Not exactly…”

He looked at me knowingly. “Yes, the slaves tell a story of beings from the light world and of their leader who was banished to where the dead are eaten…”
This was a reference to what they believed—a concept of Hell where the dead are consumed.

“There was a great battle in the light world and my father…”
Imtep nodded. “Was exiled for all eternity.”
“Yes…”
“Yes. It is interesting. And you pay too for this indiscretion.”
“Yes, I am his son.”
“And a loyal child…” He stopped speaking and looked at his daughter. I saw tears in his eyes.
Ankata sighed. “Father is thinking of my death… I am a creature of the night…”
“I raised her up from death,” Imtep declared.
I was shocked, for I had never heard of such a thing. Not from a human’s action, I hadn’t. I stammered, for I wished to know more.

Imtep nodded. “I am a sorcerer, a conjurer-magician to Pharaoh.” He looked sad when he said this. “Pharaoh’s son murdered my daughter.”
He was to tell me that Pharaoh’s son raped Ankata and when she resisted, he killed her.
“And those creatures are her coven…?”

He nodded. “They serve her loyally and always shall.” He bade me sit. “Sit and sup on blood and wine. Just the right balance makes the body ripe for love.” Even then, Imtep knew my heart. “I approve of your desires, Eco. Ankata can please you.”
I had no doubt that she could.

And so she did. The night I coupled with her was the longest night of my existence thus far. We drank of each other’s blood and saw each other’s existences.
When I tasted hers, I saw her life and then her terrible suffering and death. I saw the face of the prince who had defiled her. I saw her brief sojourn through Hell—I saw, too, the demons and devils she would call the evil gods. She fed on my own blood for a long time, it seemed. And as she did I had fancies—desires of what I wished to do to her and with her.

The night and our passion went on. It only ended when we lay in each other’s arms and she asked me for my magic.

At first I didn’t understand, but then I did. She wished to become a being like myself; a true immortal. I told her it was impossible. “We are different,” I said.
She wept when I told her where our differences lay. You see, she thought my blood would make her magical in the way that I am, but it didn’t and when she realized that, she accepted it gracefully. “I am not as you and never shall be.”
“No, I cannot be destroyed whereas…”
“I and those like me can.”
“Yes…”

We sat for hours contemplating all that had happened. And just before dawn I gave her the gift I give to all who need it, I gave her wolfbane. “This is for you and all like you, Ankata. Its magic is powerful, so enabling it is almost like being alive again.”

Now, for the first time, I was in love. I made devout declarations of that love. I swore I would never leave her and I meant it.
Please understand the passion in my heart, Rose. I was like one possessed. I was deeply and profoundly in love!

Because she had seen and felt my existence through my blood, she had many questions. I did my best to answer them. I told her of Heaven, which she knew as the light world. I told her of Father Satan and she smiled and said he was the father of all dark gods.

“I have dreamt of him. Sometimes a vision comes to me when my mind is troubled and I can think of nothing but revenge for he who harmed me.”
“Prince Memet…”
“Yes,” she said.
“But why has your father not brought him evil, a curse perhaps as punishment?”
She took a long while to answer and when she finally did she said: “There is magic protecting them, more powerful than he has ever seen.”
Greater magic than his. I could not get the words out of my mind.
What could it be, I wondered? I had to find out so I decided to ask Imtep.
Ankata told me I would find him outside. “He ponders the skies to seek answers to the questions he has…”

I did indeed find him gazing at the stars. And let me say the skies over Egypt are wondrous, filled with countless stars. He saw me and nodded. “Yes, come,” he said. “Join me.”

I think I was rather in awe of him. Yes, I know what a thing that is for me to admit. Still, it is the truth. I was flattered to stand with him and gaze at the stars.
“I have always thought those are soul fragments up there.” He smiled and shrugged. “We all have our beliefs, is that not so?”
“Yes, of course…”

He knew at once I was troubled. “You may speak to me of anything. I am honored to know so great a being.”
I had to stop myself from laughing bitterly. No one else had ever felt that way or expressed a similar thought. I thanked him. “Imtep, what is the powerful magic that your daughter spoke of that stops your power?”

He nodded sadly. “Ah yes, magic from someone like myself, another magician who learned at the same time I did. Hotop was his name.”
He then proceeded to tell me of his youth in Memphis and his friendship with Pharaoh.

“I was there when his son was born. I drank with him, offered up holy sacrifices for the babe, little knowing he would murder my own daughter some day!”
He told me of Ankata’s pledge of chastity for she intended to serve in the great Cult of Isis.
“I found her broken body, defiled it was—ravished and torn. Odious with corruption—she who pledged to know no man! I carried her from the scene of her defilement, determined to raise her up!”

He told me how this was accomplished.
“It was the forbidden magic of the dark gods that I learned along with Hotop who was to become magician and advisor to Pharaoh after I left.
“And this strong magic, you feel prevents you from accomplishing…?”
“Yes, it prevents me from seeking revenge,” Imtep replied.

“Perhaps if I see your magic I will know what to do. I will understand more and be able to help you break through the impenetrable magic that protects your daughter’s murderer. Tell me, can you conjure monsters?”
“You mean demons?”

I thought a moment. “I don’t mean for you to summon demons; that’s complicated. I mean more for you to create demonic looking creatures, and besides,” I confessed, “I should like to study under you.”

He smiled and shook his head. “The creation of demons is for the gods…or for your Satan.”
“Yes, that’s right. These I speak of would be mere imitations. Demonic creatures that are magical and not actual beings.”
He began to grow very excited. “Yes, that is good. I have done this many years ago. I shall do it again!”

He stood and with a quick wave of his arms and some unintelligible incantation he cried: “Come to me, my children!”

Well, Rose, prepare yourself for you do not like these creatures, as of course you shouldn’t for they attacked and nearly killed you. But please understand, this is my confession and I must make a good accounting of myself and what I have lived through.

And so, he began his magic. And like all magic there was ritual. His incantations lasted quite long, so long in fact that I began to grow weary of waiting, but that’s when it happened. Suddenly, I heard the flapping of wings as droves of small sized bird-like creatures began to appear. Savage, ugly things they were, with sharp teeth and an overpowering stench.
But if they were ugly—and they were, hideously so—they were also compliant. Well, truthfully, his magic made them that way. “You see,” he cried. “They are as loving as real children! Come to me, your father!” he cried.

Rose, it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. These hideous looking creatures, seemingly vying with each other as if to court favor with their master! Their squawking became softer as they called to him, each in its own way wanting his attention!

Yes, those would be the very same creatures I was to conjure throughout my existence! I had never seen such a thing. “They seem to be actual creatures though monstrous. How can this be so?”

He shrugged and smiled. “They are magical, Eco, and if they can achieve the dark purpose I set for them, I shall be indebted to you forever.”
“Come!” I said. “I think I know what to do.”
*
In simple terms, our magic had to be more powerful than our enemy’s magic. How to do it was the question. I decided to imbue Imtep with greater powers than he had. I could enhance his magic by enhancing his capabilities.

Fallen angel spawn do not use curses as a rule. I think it goes back to our natural dislike of witches. Why this is I have no idea, but just as every creature known to man has a natural enemy, so it is with beings such as myself.
I therefore set about to curse the magic of his enemy as I strengthened Imtep’s own powers.
I spoke to him that very day. He hung on every word. His great black eyes glowed with admiration. He knew I was intent on my purpose.
Initially, he had offered to take me to his altar where he intended to call upon the dark gods, but I refused.

“No, Imtep, I shall do this myself. I will do it with my mind.”

I thought of all the power I had, power given to angels at creation, power not lost though some of those angels fell as my father and Louis’ had.
Yes, I was thinking of my father. He had power—that I inherited. His was given to him from the kingdom of light and that power could not be revoked.
I spoke the words clearly and with great feeling:
“In the name of all that is powerful and holy, beyond and into all magical realms, I do invoke the strength of all purpose! The power of all that has existed or will exist! Grant this to me!”
Suddenly, the cave shook and I heard Ankata cry out. It was then that I knew Satan had come. The greatest demon of all, dark god of all dark gods had come to me; the very manifestation of the dark power!

Ankata and her father bowed before him, more in fear than homage, I think.
He was in his human form, that of a handsome young man. What an imposing picture he made. I bowed my head. “I did not wish to disturb you, great one.”
“You are like a son to me. I come when my son needs me, do not forget.”
I swore I wouldn’t.

He looked pleased and glad to see me. I think he was somewhat hurt that I did not invoke his name to begin with.
“What do you wish?”
I told him all of it; the murder, the raising up and the magical protection.
“Who is the magician? What is his name?”
“Hotop,” Imtep said. He said this without raising his head, for he was still bowing.

Satan began to transform himself then. His figure faded, merging into light and shadow but mainly shadow. This went on for quite some time. It ended when flames suddenly burst forth.
When they died, Satan’s voice proclaimed, “He is already dead. He is but carrion for the great, black birds of death. Go to Memphis and you shall see his corpse!”
Imtep was grateful to Satan for his help. But with regard to the bloody revenge he sought against his daughter’s killer that was something else. That had to be witnessed.

“You understand, don’t you? I must see this happen or I will not rest!”
Of course I understood.

And so we travelled to Memphis, Imtep, Ankata and I. Satan had left us but not before carefully eyeing up the beautiful Ankata.
I think I knew at that moment that he would have her. And I think further, I knew it was going to be whenever he wished it.
Yes, Rose, Satan has had many mistresses throughout time; you’ll be hearing of a few in this journal of mine.

At last, we were in sight of the great commercial city of Memphis—a hub of workshops, factories, and warehouses. It was believed to be under the protection of the god Ptah, the patron of craftsmen. There was a great temple dedicated to this god—the largest and most important temple in Memphis.
I saw its majestic columns from the city gates. Imtep was too preoccupied to comment, so I said nothing.

It wasn’t until we actually approached a check point that I heard a commotion. Soldiers and a crowd milled about, some shouting and calling to one another.
Imtep asked what the problem was. He was told that an official had been found brutally murdered. The soldier glanced at us. His stare became fixed upon me. “Where do you travel from?”
Complicated question this. I nearly smiled but controlled myself and mentioned a dusty little town near to where my friends and I had journeyed from.
At last we were given leave to enter the city. Imtep had managed to push his way toward where the murdered man lay. One look at his face and I knew he had recognized the dead man as his enemy.
“Yes,” he said. “Hotop is as dead as his magic.”
There was more to do in order for Imtep to have the revenge he wished.
We were soon bound for the palace. Imtep wasn’t sure whether Ankata should accompany us, but she wished it.

At last we saw it, the great palace of Memphis—a great and glittering structure of gleaming walls and towers. It looked impenetrable but Imtep motioned us. “We will approach from beneath. There are tunnels there, disused for a long time. It is from there that we will gain access!”

The tunnels were low ceilinged and we had to rush along hunched over. At last we paused at the foot of some stairs. “We must go up there. That is where the monster sleeps,” Imtep whispered.

I was incredulous. “But there are guards all around; you don’t wish to create a commotion, do you?”
Imtep smiled and told me of the oldest trick he knew. That which he called the dreamless sleep. “They will sleep and see nothing,” he whispered. “Watch.”
He muttered some incantation and there before my eyes each soldier slumped to the ground, unconscious.

Ankata began to tremble. Her father explained why.
“Her eyes behold the place of her shame and her heinous murder. Calm yourself my daughter—for it is under a different sort of wind you do now revisit the place.”
She was with us when we did it, more pale than I thought possible, and tearful. I understood it for vampires are often in such an attitude when they re-examine their own death.

Imtep was excited and his hands trembled. “I am honored that a being such as yourself would aid me so, my lord. Come,” he said. “To Prince Memet’s chamber I will show you the way!”

The prince lay sleeping. Beside him were three concubines; beautiful girls but already marked with the savagery of Memet’s so-called love making.
It all happened quickly. The stench and the creatures appeared. The girls departed quickly, but when the prince tried to flee, the vampires brought him down. They ate of his flesh and drank of his blood so quickly and so efficiently that all that remained were his bones.
Imtep comforted Ankata for she cried. But they were tears of relief and nothing else.

“You are avenged, my child. The evil that had taken you from the living world is no more.” Then, turning to me, he added, “And the murderer’s passage to the next world is in doubt for there can be no funeral preparations, nothing to ease his passage.”
I agreed, but in order to make certain that nothing of his soul survived, I called upon the dark gods of Egypt to devour it. For some reason, Imtep wept. He would confide to me later that this was because the prince’s father had been his friend. “We were boys together. We shared our lives. Who would have expected such treachery?”

I had the distinct feeling that at one time, Imtep and Pharaoh might have been thinking of marrying their children to one another. We had already discussed Pharaoh’s reaction to the news of his son’s death. Imtep knew he’d mourn him, although I got the impression the father was ashamed of the son and that shame would affect everything.

“He’d not wish his son to be murdered, but were it to happen as it has, he will accept it for he knows truth.”
We left Memphis then; we left before the cock crowed, before the sleep magic would wear off.

As for the vampiric creatures, the tool of the revenge, they were sent back from whence they came, that other world of fantasy and magic that exists so close to our own. We did not rest until we reached the desert. There, in an oasis, Imtep drank water whilst Ankata and I shared the bounty of a bird.
“I sup as a demon does and I shall for as long as I exist.”

If I found the words hard to take, I saw Imtep found them more difficult. He wept as though his heart were broken, for Ankata was undead—and she was undead because his grief had been far too great to let her rest.

99 Cents Thru 4/29 EXCERPT UNHOLY TESTAMENT - THE BEGINNINGS

Last week I shared my short story, The Ointment for Easter. It tells of an intelligent demon's witnessing of the Crucifixion. The book it inspired is Unholy Testament - The Beginnings, which btw is on offer until April 29.
Please read the excerpt below.

From Eco's journal:

Jesus is brought before Pilate:

The rabbi nodded. “It is as you say.”

What cheek, I thought, for you see, despite hating God I did still think it was unseemly to admit such a thing.
Then because it was Passover he said there was the tradition of an amnesty for a prisoner.
“Who do you choose, Barbaras or Jesus?”

I screamed for the other, having no idea at all what sort of beast the man was. “Barbaras! Barbaras!”
Pilate looked surprised but then he nodded; an ironic smile upon his lips. “Very well.”
The rabbi remained there. I wondered what would happen. I didn’t have to wonder long for someone shouted:

“He’s going to flog him, watch!”

The crowd surged forward to see the spectacle then of Christ being flogged. I did, too. I wished the rabbi pain on each lash for Ankata, I truly did.
Suddenly, I heard crying near me. Shouts for Jesus and cries of agony as if those who shouted his name were in pain, too.

He had many supporters in the crowd, many, but their wishes had not ruled that day.
Pilate had disappeared, and when he came back, he ordered in a great ringing voice: ‘This man shall be taken to be crucified!”

There were cheers but as before, there was much crying, too. He washed his hands then. “You have had your judgment. It has nothing to do with me!” he shouted.

“Oh yes, it does. It always will have!” some anonymous voice answered.
I looked to see who said it. I cannot be certain, but I did always think it was Louis. It was just a feeling I had.

And the feeling became a chill that nearly froze my blood. It affected me for a long time, too, for this was such a moment; a moment that changed the world forever, and it would figure that Louis would be involved, don’t you think?

I did see a man making his way out of the crowd. I even saw Pilate glance at him. The man looked back. Pilate saw and I did, too.

Wouldn’t it be something if it had been Louis? I think it would have been so like him to be present at such an event. I have asked him repeatedly about this but he never answered me other than to tell me it was quite enough that I was there. I think that, in itself, is rather telling.

I had indeed witnessed something pivotal. That was obvious for suddenly there fell a great silence upon the crowd—upon everyone, including Pilate and his guards. A crushing, mournful silence; the heavy silence that descends before disaster strikes.

But the moment passed and suddenly there was a surge of movement and noise as the condemned man was made to carry his own cross. His knees sank from the weight of it as he tried to hold it aloft.
I followed along, pushing my way continually—so intent was I on witnessing the entire thing.
As I did, I saw the follower known as Judas. He glanced at me and turned, disappearing into the crowd. I saw him emerge from it only to rush away, toward the city gates.

They took Jesus just outside the city; the crowds were huge by then, even bigger than they were before.
The Romans were laughing and teasing one another and all the while they were crucifying this Jesus.
Yet during this entire time, something was happening, something unseen was occurring. I felt it, deep inside of me.

It took him three hours to die. I was weary and wished to leave but just before he died he said something. I barely heard, yet the words tore into my being, eviscerating me with their meaning.
“Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”

People fell to their knees and shouted his name. The Roman guards looked shaken. One of them called out. “This man is truly the Son of God!”

It was then that I knew, Rose. It was the greatest truth I would ever know. I could deny it and choose not to believe it, but I would know it still.

And if I felt that way then worse was to happen for on the third day he rose, fulfilling the prophecy.
I saw the empty tomb. I saw his apostles and the woman he had saved from stoning—yes, that was a great story, you know. Some harlot about to be stoned and Jesus stepping forth to urge the crowd to go ahead if they were without sin. I had been told this by a man who said his name was Peter.

How they wept for their emotions were so great. And I wept too, but I wept for a different reason. My weeping was selfish. My sorrow was for myself, for I knew then that God was all powerful; that he and his angels ruled everything; that the forces of evil could succeed so far and no farther. We were little more than flies, pesky insects that the power of light could step on at any time.

I don’t remember anything much after that; someone said I screamed for days.
“You were delirious. Not awake in your mind, brother. You shall rest here.”
Isn’t it funny, Rose? Don’t you see the irony and humor in this? I was cared for by one of his followers!
“I am mad now,” I said. “And I shall be forever more.”

He tried to help me, this man. He spoke to me of peace and love. And with each word, he drove me further into the dark abyss that had already become my home and always would be.
Eventually, the crisis passed for that was what it was. I would cope the only way I could. If I could never be saved, I would wallow in my damnation. I would glory in it.
Yet, knowing truth as I did, I would also be mad and would remain mad.

99 CENTS THRU APRIL 29-UNHOLY TESTAMENT - THE BEGINNINGS

The day Eco first laid eyes on Rose Baines was the day she discovered her family’s savage butchery at the hands of her mad, incestuous father.

“I saw you leave the house that day, Rose. That terrible day you discovered your family butchered. I saw you…”

Eco, realizing he has fallen in love with her, pens a confession documenting all of his sins committed in the course of his immortal existence. His one request is that Rose reads his confession.

From Ancient Egyptian vampire cults to Roman vampire brothels to The Dark Ages, between The Crusades and The Black Death of 1348, to his meeting with the child murderer and Satanist Gilles de Rais, and concluding with his wicked affair with the Blood Countess herself, Erzebat Bathory, the Unholy Testament will take you through historical times. The pages are filled with debauchery, vice and murder - yet there is also something Eco swears to be love.
